DROWNING PREVENTION and WATER SAFETY TIPS
OVER 100 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE WHEN IN AND AROUND WATER

ACCIDENTAL DROWNING IS PREVENTABLE

Drowning is a SILENT KILLER…generally no splashing is heard to alert that someone is in trouble. It happens fast…in only minutes. Children often times silently slip into the water unnoticed, even when adults are present. Anyone who has turned around and found a child floating face down in a pool generally says, "I didn't hear a thing, it happened so fast". In the event that no adult is close at hand, to immediately pull a child to safety, seconds are crucial. It takes only two minutes for a child to loose consciousness and within four to six minutes irreversible brain damage occurs. Even in a "near-drowning" the neurological damage can be severe with staggering long term effects for both child and family.

Drowning Prevention begins with awareness and education. All children are at risk for drowning, even if there is not a backyard pool present. IN CALIFORNIA DROWNING IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH FOR CHILDREN AGES 1-4. If you do have a backyard pool, spa or pond, your children are at an even greater risk. WHY WE FOCUS ON SURVIVAL FLOAT

Drowning is caused by an intake of water and loss of air due to a persons inability to keep mouth and nose out of water to breathe. With the lack of success in in ability to breathe, panic begins to set in causing the person to tire. Drowning or near drowning occurs within minutes. This is where the Survival Back Float can be important to the safety of a child. We work with the child to create controlled, movements that aide them in getting to a back float position, without panic, from which they can breathe. They are taught to do this in clothing, as 86% of the children who drown do so fully clothed.

When handled in a positive, loving, gentle and constructive way the opposite actually occurs. How We Teach. A child becomes very confident, comfortable, secure and happy in the water and has a genuine love of the water experience. Trauma is not caused by the back float process,
